I managed to get one of my Gear Best 2212/5T 2700 kv motors set up for some bench testing recently to see what sort of thrust it is producing with 6x4 APC and 6x3 EMP props. The numbers were a bit surprising to me and makes me realize I need to do some more comparative testing at the field and clock some speeds with the HK Datalogger app on my phone.
All tests were done with a Turnigy 40A ESC (timing set to low) and Zippy Flightmax 2200 3S 40 C battery.
Here are the results with the 6x4 APC prop
13.1A/157.8W producing 410 gr/14.4 oz of thrust
33.0A/379.4W producing 770 gr/27.2 oz of thrust
Here are the results with the 6x3 EMP prop
13.2A/163.2W producing 500 gr/17.6 oz of thrust
30.4A/365.6W producing 960 gr/33.9 oz of thrust
So the numbers with the 6x3 EMP prop seem to be closer to the 2212/6 2700 Kv motors than I suspected, so I guess it is time to stop "guessing" at the field and get some speed runs done with the same motor, same plane and see what the different props give me. The different in thrust between the two props at almost 3A less draw is significant, so we'll see what the HK datalogger app on my phone says instead of my 54 yr old MK1 eyeball :) As I wrote in a previous post, I thought the top speed was faster with the 6x4 APC prop, and perhaps it is, but the thrust numbers would lead someone to think differently, time to find out the facts.
